What sets us apart is our low staff-to-client ratio of one staff member to every two or three clients, allowing for more personalized care. Additionally, we prioritize collaboration with clients’ wider treatment teams, including therapists, dietitians, physicians, and school counselors, with written consent, ensuring comprehensive support.

Adolescent Intensive Outpatient Program for Eating Disorders

The Adolescent Eating Disorder Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is specifically designed for adolescents/teens ages 12-19. The IOP is appropriate for individuals who need more support than individual therapy alone at this stage of recovery or who are transitioning from a higher level of care.

The program utilizes the bio-psycho-social-spiritual treatment model and looks at the whole person to obtain healing. Each day consists of a supportive meal, process group, skill group, resourcing, and goal setting. In addition, we offer a variety of treatment modalities, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy-Enhanced (CBT-E), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Radically–Dialectical Behavior Therapy (RO-DBT), somatic resourcing, and nutrition education. The program is highly structured to provide a comprehensive treatment experience.

Family support is a vital part of eating disorder recovery as we follow the Family Based Treatment (FBT) phases. Parents are required to attend the weekly Multi-family group on Thursdays and part of each therapy and dietitian appointment throughout their loved ones’ time in the IOP.

The Adolescent/Young Adult Eating Disorder Connection Group is designed to provide adolescents and young adults opportunities for experiencing group support as they work towards recovery.

The program utilizes the bio-psycho-social-spiritual treatment model and looks at the whole person to obtain healing. The program includes both process and skills group support, and benefits those in step-down from a higher level of care or those who need additional support and could benefit from a group setting.

The Multi-Family Treatment Program (MFT) for eating disorders is a weekly group designed to intensify skills, education, and support for families with a loved one diagnosed with an eating disorder.

Each week includes a supportive meal, education, process time, and group activities for families working towards recovery for their loved ones. All group members benefit from the support and solidarity created as they spend time with other families facing similar challenges. MFT incorporates evidence-based coping skills, social skills, and eating disorder recovery strategies.

The RO DBT class is a weekly group specifically for individuals suffering from emotional and behavioral overcontrol. Individuals fit for this treatment have a very high level of self-control, defined as the ability to inhibit urges, impulses, and desires. This is often a highly valued trait in our society as it helps us work towards more long-term goals. Most of the time, self-control is great; however, too much self-control can be problematic and lead to mental health concerns, including eating disorders, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive tendencies, depression, and hyper-perfectionism. In RO DBT, we call this excessive self-control or overcontrol (OC). Overcontrol has been linked to social isolation, poor interpersonal functioning, hyper-perfectionism, rigidity, risk aversion, lack of emotional expression, and difficult-to-treat mental health problems.

This class offers a setting for clients to learn and practice RO DBT skills to increase engagement in social situations, which leads to a more value-centered life.

FBT is the leading evidence-based approach to help families with adolescents struggling with eating disorders. FBT is based on the belief that parents play an important role in the treatment of eating disorders and are an integral part of the treatment team. The aim of FBT is to equip parents with the tools to help their loved one recover and return to normal life. To participate in this form of treatment, parents must agree to take an active role in the treatment process.

The program includes weekly individual family-based therapy sessions, family group therapy, and dietitian appointments. In addition, our team works closely with medical providers, schools, and caseworkers to provide complete and full care to each individual client and family.

The Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) group is a once-a-week program created to offer clients diagnosed with ARFID specific support for their diagnosis. Each week includes a supportive meal, process group, skills group, and nutrition education. Families are also included in a support group that allows space for all to share concerns and struggles related to ARFID.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

An IOP is a type of mental health or substance abuse treatment that provides structured therapy and support while allowing patients to live at home. Intensive outpatient mental health programs involve several hours of therapy each week, typically 3-5 days, and focus on recovery, coping skills, and relapse prevention.
IOP is suitable for individuals who need more support than traditional outpatient therapy provides but do not require the 24-hour supervision of inpatient or residential treatment. It is often used for those stepping down from higher levels of care or for those who need structured support to maintain recovery.
IOP (Intensive Outpatient Program) and PHP (Partial Hospitalization Program) are both treatment options for mental health and substance abuse recovery, but they differ in intensity and structure. PHP is more intensive, with patients attending treatment 5-7 days a week for several hours each day, providing a higher level of care and supervision. IOP is less intensive, with treatment typically 3-5 days a week for a few hours, allowing for more flexibility and integration into daily life. The choice between them depends on the individual’s needs and the level of support required for their recovery.

A typical Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) usually lasts about 8 to 12 weeks, depending on the individual’s needs and progress. During this time, patients typically attend treatment sessions 3-5 days a week, for 2-4 hours per session. The duration and frequency of the program can be adjusted based on the patient’s recovery goals and therapeutic requirements.

To enroll in an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), follow these steps:

Assessment and Evaluation: Start by contacting a mental health professional or treatment center for an initial assessment to determine if IOP is the appropriate level of care for your needs. This evaluation typically includes discussing your medical history, current symptoms, and treatment goals.

Choose a Program: Research and select an IOP that fits your specific needs, considering factors such as the program’s focus, location, schedule, and insurance coverage. It’s important to choose a program that offers the right type of therapy and support.

Verify Insurance and Financial Arrangements: Contact your insurance provider to verify coverage for IOP services or discuss payment options with the treatment center. Ensure you understand the costs involved and any financial responsibilities.

Complete Enrollment Paperwork: Fill out the necessary enrollment forms provided by the treatment center. This paperwork usually includes consent forms, medical history, and agreements on the program’s rules and expectations.

Schedule and Begin Treatment: Once enrolled, work with the program coordinator to schedule your treatment sessions. Attend your first session, meet your treatment team, and begin your path to recovery with the support of the program.

One quality that makes Water’s Edge Counseling & Healing Center unique is our whole-person and trauma-responsive approach to intensive outpatient programs. We understand that all parts of ourselves work together, and if one part is struggling, the rest of us struggles as well. With this in mind, we approach care by attending to every part of self that makes us uniquely human. Our providers are trained in the most current research and treatment methods that take into account our bodies, souls (thoughts, emotions, and will) and spirit.
Although the majority of insurances cover all the services, there are some insurances that will not cover some of the services. Not all insurance companies cover intensive outpatient programs. The best way to know if your insurance plan will cover the services, is for you to call your insurance carrier directly and/or call our front desk team and they can look into your specific plan.
To participate in IOP telehealth, patients typically need a reliable internet connection, a computer, tablet, or smartphone with a camera and microphone, and a private space where they can attend sessions without interruptions.
Research has shown that IOP telehealth can be as effective as in-person treatment for many individuals, especially when programs are designed to provide a comprehensive range of therapeutic services. The effectiveness depends on the patient’s engagement and the program’s ability to meet their needs.
IOP telehealth programs use secure, HIPAA-compliant video conferencing platforms to ensure patient privacy and confidentiality. Patients are also encouraged to attend sessions in a private, quiet space to maintain their own privacy.
